Chacun d’eux est fixé sur une toile à quelques centimètres du sol qui recouvre l’entièreté de la salle pour capter les pas des visiteur·se·s. Les vibrations des pas provoquent un mouvement de balancier de la bille contenue dans le grelot, qui se propage aux autres et se multiplie. Ainsi, l’installation détourne le son habituel des grelots, pour les faire sonner comme le bourdonnement d’une foule, un chant de sauterelles. Sensible au moindre aléa du milieu, l’installation questionne le·a visiteur·se sur l’implication de sa simple présence. « attiré par l’infinement petit, il voyait le moindre talus si saturé de vie, l’équilibre y était à la fois si fragile et si parfait, qu’il lui semblait ne rester sur la terre aucun espace où seulement s’immiscer. Each bell is fixed on a textile canvas, a few centimeters from the floor, which covers the entire room to capture the footsteps of visitors. The vibrations of the footsteps cause a pendulum movement of the ball contained in the bell, which spreads to others and multiplies. Sur la face avant de chaque boîte, une LED éclaire son contenu. Imperceptible le jour, l'éclairage révèle la nuit les ombres projetées par ce matériau invisible. Le titre fonctionne par association d'idées. Une « brûlure indienne » désigne le frottement d'un bras entre deux mains qui le tiennent et le tournent en sens inverse ; cela provoque une douleur rappelant une brûlure. Ici, les propriétés du film plastique partiellement brûlé évoquent la surface de la peau. En Suisse, le terme « indienne » désigne également un tissu aux motifs répétitifs, emblématique du rôle de la Suisse dans la colonisation et le commerce triangulaire. In each of them, a plexiglass plate is placed a few centimeters from the bottom of the box. The plate is covered with pleated plastic film,&nbsp; partially burned with a soldering iron. Par un trop-plein de buée, l’air se fait rare, on ne peut plus y respirer. Les empreintes de doigts font sentir la présence d’un corps en creux entre le fond et le devant de la boîte. On the glass, horizontal lines of fingerprints cover the entire surface like scales. By light contrast, the streaks of the sheet metal reveal the transparent fingerprints that are made with butter. The installation summons a space like a bathroom or a bathtub, a restricted space. Too much mist makes the air scarce and we can no longer breathe. Fingerprints make you feel the presence of a missing body between the bottom and the front of the box. Une carte de visite sur laquelle figure un poème est à disposition des visiteur·se·s. Alors que dans nos espaces clos sur eux-mêmes, le contact humain se fait virtuel, la proposition questionne les rencontres de notre corps avec les objets tangibles et l’environnant. Dans le confort d’un « presque-chez soi », se glisse une forme d’étrangeté dans nos postures : les jaillissements discrets et multiples d’un dissimulé qui reprend ses droits. Par couches successives, l’approche suggère le sens tactile, l’irruption de l’organique et la sensualité inhérente à tout souvenir. À trop l’oublier, elle nous rappelle que le vécu est avant tout viscéral – intime – et que la pensée ne prend forme que dans l’expérience physique qu’on en fait. Loin d’un art qui se voudrait monumental, la démarche aboutit à une série d’objets dont l’interaction avec le corps est suggérée par simple évocation visuelle – photographique ou filmique. Each of them has its own spotlight. A wall is installed on the left to create an intimate space. The floor is covered with cork that creates a fleece impression by walking.&nbsp; The goal is to recreate an interior room in a public exhibition space. An introductory text can be read at the entrance.&nbsp; Additionally, a poem written on a card is available to visitors. As human contact becomes virtual and our living spaces close in upon themselves, the proposal questions our bodily encounters with tangible objects. In the cosiness of an ‘almost-home’, strangeness interferes in our gestures: delicate eruptions of something concealed that seems to regain its rights. Where we tend to forget it, it reminds us the living is a visceral and intimate experience, and the thought is built on a physical experiment. The result takes the shape of a series of small objects such as fragile and disturbing art forms. /> This article has been published on the invitation of the International Journal of Art and Design Education in 2020, following my participation at the journal conference in 2019. It is structured around three art objects I created and presented at the Goldsmiths, University of London (GB), in 2019. Through the description and manipulation of these tactile objects, which are designed in a way that allows for ease of interaction, we arrive at the concepts of familiarity and strangeness, attraction and repulsion that underpin encounters with the art object, the other and the environment. In this article, we will rediscover the sense of touch as our singular access to the environment and a means of perceiving closeness. pratique qui attribue une grande importance à l’intelligence du corps pour capturer, par connotations successives, des situations sensorielles et émotionnelles qui font partie du champ de l’indicible et de l’à-peine-perceptible. Elle se compose d'installations in situ, d'objets artisanaux, de courtes vidéos ou d’interventions textuelles. Elle y aborde la notion de textilité sous une forme tantôt concrète, tantôt figurée. Après des études de design à l’ENSAAMA (Paris, France), elle suit un master de recherche en arts visuels à la HEAD-Genève (Suisse) et finalise actuellement un doctorat en art, en cotutelle entre l’Université Bordeaux-Montaigne (France) et la HEP-Vaud (Suisse). ---Suzanne Boulet is a visual artist based in Geneva (Switzerland). Her practice places great importance on the intelligence of the body as a means of capturing, through successive layers of connotations, sensory and emotional situations that belong to the realm of the unspeakable and the barely-perceptible. Her work takes the form of site-specific installations, handcrafted objects, short videos, and textual interventions. It addresses the notion of textility in forms that are at times concrete and at others figurative. After studying design at ENSAAMA (Paris, France), she completed a research-based Master's degree in Visual Arts at HEAD–Genève (Switzerland). She is currently completing a PhD in Art through a joint doctoral programme between the University of Bordeaux-Montaigne (France) and HEP Vaud (Switzerland).
